What is an auditory reaction test?

An auditory reaction test measures how fast you respond to a sound instead of a sight. The screen stays dark and unchanging, so there is nothing to watch. You wait, a short tone plays at a random moment, and you react the instant you hear it. That is the whole test: turn your sound on, listen, and go.

Like our reaction time test, it runs five trials and reports your median, the middle value, so a single early or late response does not throw off your score. React before the tone plays and it counts as a false start, and that trial restarts.

Why sound beats sight

Most people react faster to sound than to light. Auditory reaction time averages about 140-160ms, while simple visual reaction time sits closer to 200-250ms. The gap is real and it comes from basic physics and biology: a sound signal reaches the brain in roughly 8-10 milliseconds, but a visual signal takes about 20-40 milliseconds to be processed by the eye and passed on.

This is exactly why sprint races start with a gun rather than a light. At the elite level the difference matters: Olympic sprinters react to the starting pistol in around 150ms, and the sport rules any start faster than 100ms a false start, because no one can truly react that quickly. Getting an accurate score

Use headphones or a decent speaker, and set the volume where the tone is clear but not startling. Bluetooth audio can add a little lag between the signal and the sound you actually hear, so wired headphones or your device's built-in speaker will give you a cleaner number. Test in a quiet room so you are reacting to the tone, not a noise from outside.

As with any browser-based test, treat the absolute number as a ballpark and track your own trend instead. Your hardware adds a few milliseconds that a lab setup would not, but that offset is roughly the same every time, so comparing your score today against your score last week is still a fair fight.
