What Affects Reaction Time?

Take the reaction time test twice on the same day and you will often get two different numbers. That is not a broken test. Your reaction time genuinely shifts from hour to hour, and a 2015 review in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience catalogued more than a dozen factors that each move simple reaction time by 10 to 50ms. Sleep: the biggest thing you control

Sleep is the single largest modifiable factor. A short or broken night measurably slows reaction time, often by more than several years of aging would. Sleep deprivation also makes you less consistent: you get occasional very slow responses called lapses, where attention drops out for a fraction of a second. Age

Age is the biggest factor you cannot change. Reaction time is fastest in the early-to-mid twenties and slows by about half a millisecond per year after that, a gradual slide rather than a sudden drop. Caffeine

Caffeine genuinely sharpens reaction time, and the effect is strongest when you are tired. A 2020 meta-analysis in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews found caffeine reliably improves performance after sleep loss, with the biggest benefit in people who are short on sleep. One or two cups is the useful range. Beyond that, the jitter tends to cost you more than the alertness gains.

Whether the signal is a sound or a sight

You react faster to sound than to light. Auditory reaction time averages about 140-160ms, while simple visual reaction time is closer to 200-250ms. A sound reaches the brain in roughly 8-10 milliseconds, but a visual signal takes about 20-40 milliseconds to be processed by the eye first. That is why sprint races start with a gun, not a light. Fitness, time of day, and hydration

Exercise and general fitness correlate with faster and more consistent scores, and a light warm-up right before testing helps too. Time of day matters more than people expect: most of us test faster in the late afternoon than first thing in the morning, a circadian effect. Dehydration and being too hot or too cold both nudge reaction time up. None of these is dramatic on its own, but they stack, which is part of why your number drifts from test to test.

Alcohol and distraction

Alcohol does the opposite of caffeine, and the impairment is well documented even at levels well below the legal driving limit. Distraction and divided attention also slow you down: if part of your mind is on a notification or a conversation, the signal has to compete for attention before you can act. A quiet room and a single focus give you your true number.

Practice and familiarity

You get faster at a test the more you take it, but the gain is specific to that exact task. This is real and it is also a trap: some of the improvement is genuine, and some is you learning to anticipate rather than react. Your device (a measurement factor, not you)

Some of what looks like your reaction time is really your hardware. Monitor input lag, mouse or keyboard latency, and the browser's own rendering each add a few milliseconds before you ever see the signal, so online scores commonly run 20-60ms slower than a lab measurement. A spacebar is usually faster and more precise than a mouse click or a touch tap. Because that offset is roughly the same every time, comparing your own scores over time is still fair, as long as you keep the device and input method the same.
